The last crane

The last crane
BMV crane

The last remaining crane at Marineholmen.

I will let this majestic crane conclude my series from Møhlenpris for now. The old work horse is pretty much what is left of the once busy B.M.V. and M.K. wharfs. I do not know what will happen to it.

Plimsolls
Plimsolls by the pier

Moored plimsolls

To the south of the Møhlenpris neighbourhood, an industrial estate has been erected on the premises where the navy once built and fitted out it’s ships. The yard was abandoned by the RNN in the sixties and turned into a merchant fleet wharf, which then again suffered an epic bankruptcy following the financial acrobatics of a noveau riche fraudster. Some 300 shipbuilders were left out of work. Needless to say, this real estate cherry was swiftly picked by developers.

The piers are long gone, except for this one, where a handful of old vessels are being kept in indefinite winter storage.

The clock

Detail. Primary school decay

Detail

Facade detail from the abandoned Møhlenpris primary school. The paint is flaking and the plaster is eroding in big chunks, but the clock actually worked until they cut the power.

School decay

Abandoned school

Møhlenpris primary school

The neighbourhood primary school. One of two that were abandoned in Bergen last year, when they were deemed to be public health hazards in a state of complete decay. The children are currently being taught in portable classrooms.

The Berlin Tram

The Berlin Tram
Berlin tram in Bergen

60ies East Berlin tram

This 60ies East Berlin tram was brought to Bergen, Norway by a group of enthusiasts shortly after the Wall fell. It resembles the town’s own decommissioned and wrecked B.S. trams, but it is in a sorry state.

The tram depot

The tram depot
The old tram depot

The decaying tram depot.

In 1965 the town council closed the last of the remaining Bergen tram lines, tore up the tracks and dumped the rolling stock at sea. 40 years later they had to lay new tracks exactly where the old line No. 1 ran, and buy 12 modern Variotrams to meet the urban area’s ever growing need for public transportation. Priceless! A second line was opened a week ago.

The old Bergen Electrical Tramway depot is still standing – in decay, albeit the adjacent worker’s housing blocks have recently been renovated.

A Møhlenpris photo walk

A Møhlenpris photo walk
Tram depot window in decay

Detail from the tram depot. Window in decay.

My next couple of posts are from a photo walk I enjoyed in the Møhlenpris area a few weeks ago.

In the heyday of the shipyard and the town’s electrical tramway, this was a busy working class neighbourhood. Today it is wedged in between the new financial district and a traffic superstructure, and is largely forgotten.

Decaying public buildings and newly renovated houses are situated side by side, while a group of museum enthusiasts – mostly comprised of former tramway employees – desperately try to preserve the sorry remains of what was once the town’s pride.

Misty path

Continuing my exploration of the all-too-familiar Bergen weather. This time in the sourrounding mountains. Trekking in conditions like these is difficult, but very rewarding. Carry a map and a compass.
